What is APCI?

APCI is Atmospheric Pressure Ionization. As the name suggests, this ionization occurs under atmospheric pressure and no vacuum is needed for the ionization. It involves two stages to produce ionization, namely: flash vaporization and gas phase chemical ionization. Since it operates under atmospheric pressure, the source can be used both for GC and LC. This is a soft mode of ionization produces molecular ion as the base peak.
