How do you extract glyphosate from water?

Several ways to extract glyphosate from water have been reported. One way uses an ion-exchange SPE cartridge without derivatization and the other way involves derivatization first with FMOC-Cl and then an extraction using a reversed phase sorbent. You can try both if you have time.

Glyphosate has a basic site (pKa ~6.3) and two acidic sites (pKas~ 0.58, 2.95). For the ion-exchange method, you can try either or both Strata X-C (strong cation exchange) to gain retention at the basic site and/or Strata X-AW to gain retention at the acidic sites.


The reversed phase extraction method for FMOC-derivatized glyphosate can be done using Strata X.

Please collect and analyze also the load and wash fractions while you try these methods to monitor analyte movement. This will help better optimize your extraction method.
