What is solid phase microextraction (SPME)?

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) is a solvent free adsorption/desorption sample preparation technique.  A fiber coated with an appropriate extracting phase is used to isolate and concentrate analytes from either liquid or gas phase.

Upon introduction into the sample, analytes are adsorbed onto the coating of the fiber.  Adsorption takes place over a set time period.  The fiber is then transferred to a GC injector, where the adsorbed analytes are thermally desorbed and delivered to the analytical column.
