Supported liquid extraction (SLE) is a modern technique developed as an alternative to traditional liquid-liquid extraction. Diatomaceous earth is used as the solid support. A typical SLE method begins with a sample loading/absorption step, and then elution of analytes is performed using a water-immiscible solvent that has good solubility of the analytes.
SLE does co-extract any interferences that share the same solubility as the analytes for the elution solvent. Further cleanup using SPE can be performed.
