What is headspace sampling?

Headspace sampling is a technique used for the concentration of volatile organic compounds.  Headspace refers to the space in a sample vial above the liquid or solid sample.  In static headspace sampling, analyte vapor is allowed to collect and saturate in this space and then the vapor is transferred to undergo instrumental analysis.

In dynamic headspace sampling, the headspace vapor is continuously transferred to the analytical instrument.
