How do you extract ketones and aldehydes?

Volatile ketones and aldehydes can be analyzed by headspace-GC/MS.

Reversed phase solid phase extraction can be employed to extract non-volatile ketones and aldehydes.  You can also derivatize ketones and aldehydes first with dinitrophenylhydrazine and then perform RP-SPE to cleanup and concentrate.

For both volatile and non-volatile ketones and aldehydes from air samples, a specialty silica phase from Waters (Sep-Pak DNPH) that is coated with acidified dinitrophenylhydrazine to form hydrazine derivatives with ketones and aldehydes in situ can be used.  The derivatives can then be eluted for HPLC analysis.
