How do you extract terpenes from beer?

Terpenes have good solubility in chloroform. You can perform an initial liquid extraction from beer, followed by a SPE cleanup method using Strata Silica. Please use the method described below as a starting point.

Pretreatment:
Dilute 2 mL of decarbonated beer with 2 mL of DI water. Add 5 mL of chloroform and vortex for 1 minute. Centrifuge and allow aqueous/organic layers to separate. Pipette organic layer into a separate vessel, evaporate and reconstitute in hexane for SPE.

To a 100 mg Strata Silica cartridge,

Condition/equilibrate with 600 uL of chloroform and then hexane
Load pretreated sample dissolved in hexane slowly at 1 mL/min
Wash with 600 uL of hexane
Dry cartridge on full vacuum for 10 min
Elute with 2x 600 uL of Chloroform

Make sure the load and wash fractions are collected and analyzed to track analyte movement. Further optimization can be performed based on initial results.
