What is a depth filter?

A depth filter is made up of layers of filter materials with different pore sizes and density.  While large particles will get trapped on the top layers, finer particles may travel through the filter materials and get trapped inside succeeding layers of the filter.  Although flow may be slower, depth filters generally perform better in removing particles than surface filters.
