What is headspace analysis?

Headspace analysis is a GC sample preparation technique commonly employed to extract volatile analytes from involatile sample matrices.  A gas stream passes over the sample and carries volatile analytes with it.  Analytes are taken directly from the headspace or the gas above the matrix can be flushed from the sample vessel and trapped.

Typical assays test for blood alcohol, residual solvents in paint or food, etc.
